In 1999, Xiqingpu landfill was shut down and transformed into the expansive greenery of trees and vegetation of Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park. The park’s main feature is the “Golden Rooster” sundial. According to Chinese folklore, birds could tell time. The sundial, shaped like a legendary bird stretching its neck in preparation for flight, symbolizes foresight and the potentiality of the future. Combining story with science, it is also used to observe the changes of the sun’s position in the sky throughout the year. An embodiment of culture and understanding of nature, the sundial reminds all to treasure every transient moment.
